Databases, Subscription Services & Bibliography Composer

This is the gateway to the subscription databases through the public library: Opposing Viewpoints and Student Resource Center. Both offer great resources on controversial issues. Use the access number on the back of your public library card to enter through articles and databases from the main page.
Our library subscribes to two databases through Facts on File: America History Online and World History Online. Please ask Ms. Powers for the user name and password you will need to access these valuable resources when outside of the school.
NewsBank is a subscription database of periodicals available through the San Francisco Unified School District. Please ask Ms. Powers for the access user name and password you will need from outside of the school.

Net Trekker is a subscription search engine that has organized and pre-evaluated the Web for students. It is the place to begin when doing any Web research. When inside the school you do not need a user name and password. However, when outside of the school, you must. Please register in order to get your own user name and password.

Mission High School uses Noodlebib to help cite sources and make a bibliography. Please ask the library media teacher for the password you need.

IDEA: International Debate Education Association
Debatabase is the world's most useful resource student debaters. Inside you will find arguments for and against hundreds of debating Topics, written by expert debaters, judges and coaches. Also included are background summaries, links to websites of interest and recommended books, example motions and user comments.

City College of New York: Government Documents Division
This huge gateway offers controversial issues and primary sources (including statistics) galore.

 

Controversial Issues: Multnomah County Library
This site has links to many controversial social issues with a balanced viewpoint, and more to the left. Use these links and the Town Hall sites to present a balanced argument in your research papers.

 

Controversial Issues: Public Agenda Online
Here is a great site to research social issues. There are lists of topics, linked to many different types of information on each issue (with lots of statistics) and public opinion. After linking to each site, there are more links with valuable information.

This a great site for controversial issues from the conservative viewpoint. You can search by keyword or open the daily updates of articles. There are also links to "The Right Pages" which will lead you to web pages of conservative viewpoints on controversial issues.
